As cities grow and evolve, it is essential to create spaces that are liveable, inclusive, and supportive of all residents, particularly our youngest citizens. This talk explores the transformative potential of play-driven urban design, focusing on how integrating play into streets, public spaces, and residential areas can foster healthier, safer and more vibrant communities. Through global case studies and research, the presentation will examine strategies for embedding play into the urban environment, ensuring cities are both joyful and equitable.

Biography
Natalia Krysiak is a practicing architect, play consultant, and founder of Cities for Play. She specializes in designing learning and play environments that support children’s development, well-being, and engagement with the built environment.
With a passion for creating child-friendly cities, Natalia has designed a wide range of spaces for children and young people, including school campuses, early childhood centers, urban play strategies and family-friendly housing developments. Beyond her built work, she is actively involved in global and local research on how cities can better support children’s health, independence, and opportunities for play.
In 2019, Natalia was awarded a prestigious Churchill Fellowship to study best practices for designing child-friendly environments in Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Canada, and the UK. Building on this research, she founded Cities for Play, a design practice dedicated to shaping child-friendly spaces and advocating for policies that prioritize children’s needs in cities worldwide.
Natalia has spoken at leading conferences, including the World Early Childhood Development Conference in Abu Dhabi, Urban Design Forum in London and the UN Sustainable Development Conference in Singapore. Her work has been featured in Planning Institute of Australia, The Architecture Bulletin and The Urban Developer.
