How to Future Proof Designs for The Next Generation of Users, Assuring Quality and Sustainability

Biography

An experienced Architect, Matt leads the Warren and Mahoney Architects sport and recreation team in New Zealand and is a director and Board Chair of the International Association for Sports and Recreation – Australia/New Zealand Section. Matt is deeply involved in shaping the future of sports and recreation through architecture. His leadership in moulding projects that focus on inclusivity, sustainability, and cost-efficiency shows a strong commitment to not just the physical spaces, but the social impact these spaces have on the communities they serve. With roles that encompass international stadia, high-performance sport and grassroots sports venues, Matt expresses a broad understanding of how sports architecture can serve diverse needs, from elite athletes to local participants. With a diverse portfolio of project typologies Matt understands the underpinning commonality between them all that prioritises social impact. Ultimately, Matt’s work as an architect goes beyond just creating venues as he is dedicated to designing spaces that inspire and empower people. His focus on social values in design creates facilities that encourage participation, foster community spirit, and help address broader societal issues.

Biography

Darryl Condon is interested in design that acts as a catalyst for positive social change. As Managing Principal at hcma architecture + design, he has helped create engaging public spaces across Canada for more than 35 years. Darryl is a registered Architect, and a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC). He is a Past-President of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) and has been an Adjunct Professor at the UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Darryl is also President of the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities’ (IAKS) Executive Board, a Senior Fellow with Design Intelligence’s Design Futures Council, a Global Fellow with WRLDCTY, and a Fellow of the UK’s Royal Society of Arts.

She is deeply passionate about delivering outcomes that facilitate participation and connection through sport, advancing equitable access and stronger, more connected communities.
